—The Sopranos series finale was brilliant. David Chase is a genius. A good storyteller can wrestle everything into order and tie it up neatly, but it takes a great storyteller to know when to hold back and let the story take on a life of its own.
—Waitress was as cute and quirky and painfully realistic as I expected. Adrienne Shelly did a lovely job and I think she’d like the legacy she’s left behind.
—Ocean’s Thirteen was a little disappointing. Love the cute boys and the revenge plot had potential, but there were just too many holes and contrivances to make it worthy of its predecessors. I would also like to see some female representation, please. I love Ellen Barkin, but her role was as flimsy as the plot. Aren’t there women thieves? I know there are. C’mon, boys. It’s the 21st century, time to let the girls play, too.
—My misguided renegade woodpecker has inspired a story. I’m still working it out but it makes me happy to think about it, which is always a good sign.
—Starbucks is popping up like weeds around my neck of the woods. I know they’ve been around forever, but the south is notoriously slow to catch on to fads. Now it’s all I can do to drive five miles without spotting the Starbucks logo. Which is fine by me, but it’s also nice to have independent coffee shops to support. Bean There Cafe is my newest happy find.
—School is out. Alice Cooper’s song keeps playing in my head. I must be getting old, because having my writing haunts overrun by caffeinated teenagers is not making me happy.
—This summer will be divided into two parts: before Jay leaves and after Jay leaves.
