It’s true, I do suck. At marketing, I mean. Sheesh. I’ve never been particularly good at selling myself or my goods. I could never work on commission because I could never sell someone what they don’t need. And I could never convince someone to buy a story or book I’ve written because, hey, there are all these other fabulous stories and books they should be reading and who am I to tell them to choose mine?
I was asked to provide a quote about myself and/or my writing. Something fabulous and good for promotion. Um… okay. I should take a page out of the books of some of the authors I admire—authors who not only manage to promote their books, but regularly post reviews (complete with fabulous quotes). I read the reviews as I run across them and I try to remember to post links on my blog, but sometimes I forget. And I never save those fabulous quotes about my writing because, well, isn’t that just a little bit… conceited? Hmph. I guess it’s also good marketing.
After an hour or so of hunting around—at 6:30 this morning when I couldn’t sleep. Again.— I was able to scrounge up a few lovely quotes. (Thank God for the internet, where nothing ever goes away.) They will all be used at some point in the promotion of my anthology Fairy Tale Lust: Erotic Bedtime Stories for Women. In the hopes that I have more books to promote in the future, I think I need to start a file for such requests. Fabulous Quotes About Me doesn’t sound too pretentious, does it? Yeah, that’s what I thought. Maybe I’ll just call it Because I Suck at Marketing. At least that’s truth in advertising.
Let mine be a cautionary tale, dear writers. Save those reviews and quotes and nice things people say (especially if those nice things are said by Important People). Someday, if you’re lucky, you’ll get to pull them out and use them to promote yourself. And it won’t seem conceited or pretentious at all—it’ll just be good marketing.
