I’ve Been Bitten

I didn’t watch “teen” shows even when I was a teen, but I’ve been sucked in (ha! sucked!) by the new teen vampire show The Vampire Diaries.  I’ve been recording some of this season’s new shows, figuring it’ll be nice to have something to do when the baby comes and I’m brain dead with exhaustion.  Television is good for that, you know.  So, The Vampire Diaries sucked me in with its angsty teen drama (as portrayed by actors in their 20s and 30s) and Virginia setting.  Oh, and the television show is based on a book series by L.J. Smith and HBO has had great success with Charlaine Harris’s southern vampire series (aka True Blood), so it seems likely this show will do equally well.

The Vampire Diaries is about a love triangle between Elena, a mortal female, and two vampire brothers.  Unlike Twilight, these teens get frisky.  The vampire brothers are Stefan and Damon Salvatore, as played by Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder.  Predictably, one brother is good and one is… evil.  Stefan is the good brother, his broad forehead wrinkled in perpetual consternation over something his evil brother Damon has done.  Paul Wesley is a good-looking guy, but it’s Ian Somerhalder I’m lusting over.  He’s delicious as the vengeful, blood thirsty bad boy brother.  Personally, I think Damon is just misunderstood.

The show is what you’d expect for a teen vampire drama—lots of silly relationship issues and improbable high school scenarios with the obligatory soulful gazes between star-crossed lovers and the occasional dead (or turned vampire) body.  I’m not sure I would have kept watching if not for Ian.  I guess I just like the bad boys.  Plus, he’s got this young-but-edgier Rob Lowe thing going on…

And he’s 30 (turns 31 the day before I’m due, actually)—so it’s perfectly respectable for me to be lusting after him.  I think it’s the smirk… he has this wicked smirk, you see…

Oh, never mind.  Blame it on hormones and cut me some slack.

  • I can’t wait for The Vampire Diaries to come to UK TV. I’m totally hooked on True Blood so am sure this will have the same effect. I also read some L.J. Smith novels when I was younger, so I’m already familiar with her work.
