My Oscar Picks

Saturday, February 26th, 2011 • 1 Comment on My Oscar Picks

For the first year since I can’t remember when (and certainly since they started nominating so many movies), I have seen all of the Oscar nominated films!

Black Swan
The Fighter
The Kids Are All Right
The King’s Speech
127 Hours
The Social Network
Toy Story 3
True Grit
Winter’s Bone

Whew! Before the nominations were announced, I had only seen Inception and Winter’s Bone (believe it or not!), so I had some catching up to do. I wrapped it up last night with The Kids Are All Right and now I can have some fun and make my Oscar picks!  So, here they are:

Best Picture: Inception (but I’m torn between that and True Grit)

Actor in a Leading Role: Jeff Bridges, True Grit

Actor in a Supporting Role: Christian Bale, The Fighter

Actress in a Leading Role: Natalie Portman, Black Swan

Actress in a Supporting Role: Hailee Steinfeld, True Grit

Animated Feature Film: Toy Story 3 (But I didn’t see the other 2 nominees)

Art Direction: Inception

Cinematography: True Grit

Costume Design: Alice in Wonderland (I didn’t see it, but the costumes look stunning)

Directing: The Coen Brothers, True Grit

Film Editing: Black Swan

Music (Original Score): Inception

Music (Original Song): “We Belong Together,” Toy Story 3

Visual Effects: Inception

Writing (Adapted Screenplay): Winter’s Bone

Writing (Original Screenplay): Inception (But I would love it if The Kids Are All Right won)

I left out categories where I didn’t see any of the films (documentary, foreign and short film categories, for example).  Maybe someday I’ll make a point of seeing all the films that are nominated in any category. Though that’s probably far too ambitious.  The only other person I know who seems to be as into the Oscars as I am is Neve Black, who is attending an Oscar party that sounds awesome.  It’ll be just me and the television tomorrow night, for however long the awards last… and maybe some snacks to get me through the night!

So, what about you?  Who will you be rooting for on Oscar night?

I am ashamed to say I can’t make an informed comment about any of them…as I have not seen any of them.  No excuse except lack of time.  The better half even managed to get a good deal on Inception, so it’s even waiting for us to watch!

I have been following the buzz to figure out what I want to watch.  Based on reputation and research only, I’d be pleased if Inception wins.  I generally like DiCaprio’s work.  Ditto True Grit; I can’t wait to see that.  I’d be pleased if The King’s Speech won, too; I also love Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter (even if I’m eeeh on Firth.)  I won’t even mind if The Black Swan wins.  I *will* roll my eyes if The Social Network wins, just because…well, really sounds pretty overhyped for the topic.  I really just don’t like Facebook enough to *care* about the story of its founding.  Or maybe that’s *my* generational bias speaking!  I know my younger stepson and his friends adored it.

I would go see Bridges and Bale do charades, so I’d be happy to see either of them win.  I was a little sorry not to see DiCaprio nominated.  I actually first saw him in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape and The Basketball Diaries, so I really winced when he ended up getting the teen-idol image for Titanic. He’s deserved more recognition than he’s received for some of his roles, but the pretty-boy reputation seems to follow him around like a tin can tied to a dog’s tail.  You’ve seen Inception, though – do you think he deserved a nod for it?

As for the rest, can’t really say except for Toy Story…and I just can’t imagine a Pixar film losing in that category.

I am SO jealous of Neve’s party!  That just sounds like sixteen different flavors of awesome fun.  Don’t think I could ever pull that together with our crowd of friends, but if Fillion manages to buy Firefly, I guarantee I’m holding a Firefly marathon and having everyone dress appropriately, gorram it.
