NaNoUpdate

Wednesday,November05,2003

I broke 10,000 tonight on my NaNoWriMo book.  Woooo.  40,000 to go.

Chapter Four is below.  I think I’m starting to flouder.  It’s too early to flounder.  I can’t start floundering until I’m 3/4ths the way through.  Oh well.  Can you tell I’m not exactly thrilled with what I’m writing right now?  I think it’s just a mood.  Hopefully some good stuff will come to me soon.  In the meantime, I’m just glad to make my daily word count.

NaNoingtheNightAway

Tuesday,November04,2003

I feel like all I’m doing is writing about NaNoWriMo, which is probably true.  It is taking up a lot of my free time this week, but I’m still in the first blush of infatuation with this whole notion of writing a book in a month.

I’ve done the book-in-a-week thing a couple of times, but who are we kidding?  No one writes a book in a week (okay, almost no one) and the entire process is mostly just a writing exercise to get you out of your rut.  This, however, is different.  Fifty thousand words in a month is entirely do-able.  They may not be great words, but I can do that.  Of course, I’ve been up until 3 or 4 in the morning every night since Friday, so that’s given me a lot of time to write.  We’ll see how that changes come the weekend when I have to work.

Still, if you’re a writer or an aspiring writer, NaNoWriMo offers a great opportunity at making some headway on whatever ideas are churning around in your brain.  And if you happen to work best under a deadline (which I do), even better.

Chapter 3 of my still untitled work in progress is below.  It’s all crap, but it’s on paper and I can fix it later.  Hopefully.

MoreNaNo

My NaNoWriMo novel (as yet untitled, which is unusual for me) is progressing.  I didn’t do an update here last night because my web page was down for some reason.  I think I should do chapter updates rather than bits and pieces, so below are Chapters 1 and 2.  Three is almost done and will be up tomorrow.

Pardon the lack of formatting, I don’t have the energy to mess with it.  I figure if anyone is interested in reading my sad little attempt at a young adult novel, they won’t mind.

I’m over a thousand words ahead of where I need to be in terms of my daily word count.  That’s nice, but it probably won’t last.  I figure I need to get as far ahead as I can because I may not get much writing done at all Thanksgiving week.  I’m really determined to make the 50,000 mark by the end of the month and I feel pretty good about it now.  We’ll see how I feel in 27 days.

NaNoWriMo

Sunday,November02,2003

I got a late start on the NaNoWriMo project, but I did write almost 1500 words tonight.  It’ll be interesting to see if I actually make the 50,000 word count and if what I’ve written is any good.  I’m hoping this story will hold my interest for a month.  Since it’s a YA story and something completely new to me, I think it will.  We’ll see.

I’m not sure how much of this so-called book I’ll be posting here, but if anyone is truly interested in reading some bad writing, tonight’s efforts are below.

29 days to go.  Onward.

Loftygoals

Friday,October31,2003

I have a couple of goals for November, besides consuming large quantities of turkey and stuffing.

First off, I will be going quietly insane along with a few thousand other writers as we take part in National Novel Writing Month.  The goal for NaNoWriMo (and I just love saying NaNoWriMo) is to write a 50,000 word novel in a month.  I have only the sketchiest ideas of what I will be writing, but hopefully plot details will come to me in a dream.  Or some such.

I’m looking forward to the experience as I have wanted to participate in past NaNoWriMos (this is the fifth year for the program) and have always managed to miss the deadline (convenient, that).  So… this year!  I will be posting bits of my work-in-progress here, for entertainment and a good laugh.  Obviously, with only 30 days to write an entire novel, it will be rough.  Very rough.  I’m planning to write a young adult novel because I’ve never written one before and also because the word count is around 50,000 for the average YA novel.  I’d hate to spend a month writing a book and still have forty thousand words to write before it was finished.  I guess I could make it my goal to write a 90,000 word book in a month, but I think I’ll stick with 50K.  Lofty is one thing, crazy is another.

My other goal for November is to read Virgin Suicides for my newly formed “book club.” I’m not sure you can call two people reading and discussing the same book a “club,” but that’s what we’re calling it for lack of a better word.  The book was not my choice, but we did use a fair and democratic process for choosing it (which involved an animal skin hat) and, oddly enough, I had chosen Middlesex by the same author as one of my choices.  I figured I couldn’t go wrong with a Pulitzer Prize winner, but I’m glad we’re reading Virgin Suicides for one reason-- it’s a shorter book.

So, those are my two main goals for November: to write a book and to read a book.  This should be fun.  Or something.
