CaffeinatedInsomnia

Wednesday,July09,2008

I’m in that weird head space where I’m simply exhausted from a lack of sleep and completely wired from too much coffee.  The feeling is a bit like my head being disconnected from my body-- my heart is racing, but my brain is fuzzy; I’m jittery, but my reaction time is delayed.  Keep me away from sharp knives, automobiles and the remote control (or I’m liable to end up watching Nancy Grace).

The writing that comes out of this mental state is like literary Lucky Charms-- a bit of this, a bit of that, a sweet bit, a hard bit, an unrecognizable bit (oh wait, that’s a raisin from the Raisin Bran...).  I worked on three different writing projects today-- a short story, an essay and a novel.  Whew.  It’s a wonder the characters from one don’t jump over into the next.  Or maybe they do.  Maybe insomnia is why I had so many imaginary friends as a child-- I was so tired I thought I really knew the characters in Little Women.  (Wouldn’t that have been grand?)

I think I need to medicate with Benadryl to offset the caffeine and take my body down to my brain’s level.  Nothing like a coma-like sleep to make one feel refreshed, right?

Charm bracelets have been popular from as early as 500 B.C., when Assyrians, Babylonians and even Persians wore charms which they associated with special powers. In recent years gold charms and silver charms are becoming popular once again.
