FebruaryRamblings

So we’ve made it to February.  The gyms are empty once again, the winter coats are on clearance and the spring semester is well and truly underway.  February 1 is too soon to start panicking about research papers and presentations, right?  That’s what I thought, and yet the panic gnaws at me.  So far, I’ve managed to shake free, but the day is coming when panic will latch on to my leg and won’t let go until the end of April.  Ah… grad school.

I’m not too worried about the groundhog seeing his shadow.  My part of Virginia is having an unseasonably warm winter with average temperatures in the 60s.  I’m not complaining.  The couple of truly cold days we’ve had have only made me long for spring.  I’m going to garden like it’s 1999 this spring.  No, I have no idea what that means, but take my word for it-- there will be lots o’ tomatoes and cucumbers and other goodies this summer.  Oh my.

When I was a kid, I thought February was spelled F E B U A R Y, pronounced Feb-u-ary.  I don’t know why I never noticed that first “r” or why no one ever corrected my pronunciation, but I was mortified to realize I’d been spelling and pronouncing it wrong.  I mean, I was a smart kid, I had a reputation.  Oh, the horror!  Even though I always spell it correctly now, there are still times when I catch myself pronouncing it wrong.  See, I’m not perfect.  Heh.

I’m ready for February.  Groundhogs and Godiva and gearing up for spring break in London.  What’s not to love?

2 R’s?! How scary. That’s okay, I won’t tell you how old I was before I figured out that Washington DC was not in the state of Washington : )
